All depends how much you plan to print, the more you will print, the more economical a decent (not an el cheapo) colour laser becomes.

The less you will print, the cheaper inkjets do better.

Also depends WHAT you plan to print. Lots of text ? Laser is quicker, and generally better than inkjet.
Business graphics, presentations ? Laser will be better and quicker.

Photos, now that depends, Inkjet rules on DPI ratings, and in theory quality, but with "good quality laser paper" (ie high brightness, 90gsm) you can get really good images off a modern laser printer. Also take into account the cost of coated paper to get the best from an inkjet.

If you check magazine reviews, such as in Computer Shopper, they often quote cost per page statistice for printers.

Definitely inkjet is the way to go. Laser printers are not designed to print on photo paper and do not provide the full range color gamut that inkjet does. I have a Kodak inkjet printer and I find the results are excellent, really lab quality prints. The good part is when you need more ink, as it is about half the cost of competing models. Their ink is pigmented btw, so it has much better fade resistance (permanence)

you can print more pages in laser, the cost of 4 catridges in inkjet maybe the cost of 1 toner cartidge... if your planning to get a color inkjet, get a model that is designed with separate cartridges per color.. this will save you money, you will only replaced the empty cartridge..
