Normal csetup would be Phone line in to Modem, cable from Modem to Router, then cable(s) from router to PCs,
Unless the Modem has both netowrk and USB and both are being used, you should not need cables from both the PC to modem and PC-router-modem
If you can use network (rj45 connection, Cat5 cables) rather than USB do so, less system resources used to operate it.

What kind of router? Also does your ISP let you have a router? The router could be there to fool the ISP into thinking there's only one computer on the line.
anyways if you can do this. You should be able to plug the RJ45 (CAT5 Cable) into the router from the modem then plug the computers into the router... Since that's what a router is anyways..
And for the WiFi question it depends on if the router is a WiFi router. If it is then you should have no problem with getting a laptop to run WiFi on it.

This wiring is completely wrong. The wan port of the router should go to the modem, then the lan port of the router goes to the pc.

Are you going to have DLS or cable where you live? Are you going to live alone, just you and your laptop? If you chose DSL or Cable you will need a modem and it will be supplied from the provider. Just plug modem into wall, then into laptop. If you are doing dialup, just plug the phone line into the computer. If your neighbor has it, and you are wireless you can tap into theres, of course that would not be nice and maybe construed as stealing.

sounds like they set up internet connection sharing instead of just using the router to allow access.
this would allow them to filter your access, or completely cut it off without affecting their access.
no, you don't need a loopback for the router to work. just a modem and a router.

modem to router, router wirelessly to your laptop, you dont require any other wires except the ones from modem to router.
should be able to auto connect, make config changes via webaccess page (192.168.0.1 ect)

That's a funny question, because you need a parachute to skydive, but if you're not a weak minded emotional tool, then you don't need God to enjoy the things life has to offer, like skydiving for instance.
