I'm 21 years old. I'm planning on going to a local community college. Because it's cheaper and closer to home. I didn't go to college right out of high school because I couldn't afford it. I spent the last 2 years working at a preschool as a teacher assistant saving as much money as I could for school. and now want to go to college and major in education. But I'm worried that I'm starting too late and will have a hard time making friends and stuff. I know I should really focus on getting my degree and I am but at the same time I was hopeing to meet some great people too.

It is never too late. I went back to graduate school in my late 40s & got a PhD at age 49.

The answer to your question lies within you. It will be good for you if you have the right attitude and make it good for you. Stretch yourself.

I think you might be surprised at the diversity you'll find at a community college. Especially if you take evening classes, you'll find that a lot of people are older, working during the day, and taking night classes to get a degree. I've taken online classes in education, the majority of the class was 25+. A few students were in their 40s, one or two were even older.

As for making friends, that's not what school is for. You might make a few friends, but a lot of people there also have jobs and families and aren't looking to make friends.

I agree with all of the posts... it's never too late to go back to school. I earned my bachelor's degree 20 years after I took my first college class. At 21, you're right in the same age group as the majority going to college. But that doesn't mean anyone -at any age- would feel out of place.

College is for learning, at all ages! It isn't like high school - no one cares what year you're in; no one cares how old (or young) you are. What matters is how you apply yourself to your studies. From your question (and explanation about working to save $$), you'll do great in college.

Good luck!

You'll still be able to make friends in college--a lot of the community college students are like you, in that they didn't immediately go to college right after high school. Some of them might even be older than you are. Community college may not be the best place to go for socializing, but you can still socialize. So just go to college, work hard towards getting your degree, and have a good time!

You will find some great people because college offers such a diverse and neat group of folks.

Because of the experience you already have, you may be a mentor to younger students and will also likely have great relationship with your professors.

You will be fine.

Furthering your education is never bad for you. I'm 38 and I still continue to increase my education.
