In what way? The two main characters weren't presented as such. It deals with a couple of gay men at a time & place in America where that was very dangerous. Whether they work as ranch hands, accountants or soldiers is beside the point- they aren't typical, and that's understood. It's almost like asking if a movie about Jackie Robinson damages the traditional image of white baseball players of that era.
Most depictions of cowboys from earlier era films and TV of the 1950s weren't real- they were 2-dimensional caricatures, but that's not limited to westerns. Older police dramas like "Adam-12" or "Perry Mason" are nowhere near the realism of "Law & Order", but I don't think the latter show damages the image of police officers or district attorneys, it shows them as complex human beings from very different backgrounds.
In Brokeback, the whole movie revolved around the enormous damage two guys did to their family life and social standing, because what they did was unthinkable to practically everyone in their community- which mainly consisted of traditional American cowboys.
So no- I think the movie showed those guys for who they were in CONTRAST to the culture they lived in, it didn't present that culture as gay-friendly by a long shot.

Well I only watched like the first half of the movie if even, and did not like it one bit. Most people or southerns picture a cowboy to be a, goodlooking, strong, straight man. I do anyways, and I think that a real cowboy is straight. I do not like the image of a cowboy created in this movie, but it is a subject we all laugh and in a way make fun of in the Ag building at school.

Nah ... I don't see how the movie would affect how the American Cowboy is viewed. I came across your profile a while back ... and believe me, Brokeback Mountain didn't even enter my mind. :)

26. Prostitutes always look like Julia Roberts or Jamie Lee Curtis. They have expensive clothes and nice apartments but no pimps. They are friendly with the shopkeepers in their neighbourhood who don`t mind at all what the girl does for a living.

I really don't care about them cowboys in the movie.
That flick wasn't even hot! Oh geez, give me a real kiss anytime. Those two actors still have the "yuck" factor in them. You call that sex? Maybe I should go there & teach them the proper way! Grrrr....
I still love cowboys... :-)
Saddle up your steed & take me away!

Like all traditional images, that of the American cowboy has been stereotyped for so long that perhaps it "needed" to be changed. I dunno. I don't personally know any cowboys.
