How do countries (other than the US) keep track of their citizens? Is it like a social security number?

Nearly all countries have a national identification system of some kind, but the ways they work vary widely. Most people in the world are required to carry their national ID at all times, unlike the US.

In Korea your national identity number is used for everything.
