I am thinking about buying a laptop that will mainly be used to program security systems for my small business.
I found 2 good ones that I might pick, but i don't know which one

You are the one that need to make that decision but i like the first one more than the last one. You should compare both computer and the one that offers the most buy it.

Of the two, I would buy the Gateway. Their specs are comparable, but the Gateway has a faster processor. Also, the people at Walmart aren't very computer saavy, so if you're ever in need of assistance, I think it would be a lot easier to get from Best Buy.
I do feel obliged to tell you that neither of those laptops are very good. They are using much older processor technology, and while you don't sound like you'll be doing a whole lot with them at the moment, that could change. And if it does, I think you'll find your laptop doesn't perform as well as you would like. I would suggest spending a little extra money and getting a laptop with an Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processor. It will be a viable machine for much much longer.

I'm not real sure about the acer...Gateways are good but they're not that great. and they both only have 512 mb of memory which isn't a lot. Whatever you do...don't get a dell.

well they are both crap. they both come with 512mb of memory which is not enough to run vista smoothly, 1gb is good, 2gb. is best. go with the gateway @ bestbuy. i hate acer laptops.

Acer is better than Gateway, so get the Acer.
