Very few people actually laugh out loud when reading text messages. It's just a casual way of telling someone you thought something was funny, clever, cute, or whatever. Plus, it's quicker and looks better than typing out "hahahaha."

The "LOL" abbreviation has another use. Added at the end of a message, it tells the person that the message was sent in a joking manner, and not to take it seriously. Without it, some messages could be interpreted completely different than the sender's intent.

LOL is just the online way of expressing that you thought something was funny...you don't ACTUALLY have to BE laughing to say LOL. If its really funny then you could use LMAO (laugh my *** off)...if you were to use fbidlol then you have to explain what it means to the person you used it with...keep it simple.
