6% of n = 9
and
80% of n = 20
What is the formula used to figure these out? I've done them twice for my kid but the answers are not on the answer sheet. I think the answer sheet is incorrect. Thanks

follow this rule

the percent number is always written as a fraction over 100

in the problem, whatever follows the word of is placed in the bottom of a second fraction.

then use cross multiplication to solve the proportion

6% of n = 9 translates into 6/100 = 9/n

and cross mult. yields 6n = 900 or x = 150

80% of n = 20 translates into 80 / 100 = 20 / n

and 80n = 2000 or n = 25

works for many types of problems, not just these two.

percent can also be expressed as a decimal. For example, 6% is 0.06 and 80% is 0.80. Essentially you're multiplying your "n" by these decimals to get your final answer.

0.06 x n = 9
divide both sides by 0.06 and you'll get n = 150

0.80 x n = 20, so 20/0.80 = n = 25

6% of n = 9 means that 6n/100 = 9
6n = 900
n = 150

80% of n=20 means that 80n/100 = 20

Let's reduce the fraction

4n/5 = 20

4n = 100

n=25

Divide...and conquer.

6% of n=9, then n=9/0.06 = 150
80% of n=20, then n=20/0.8 = 25

Double check your work by plugging the numbers back in.
6% of 150 is 9.
80% of 25 is 20.
