I omitted a word.
It should have been was and not "IS."
Thanks

This question is asked of virtually every leader in world history and most of the time the answer is no.

Napoleon was not gay. He was actually an extremely active heterosexual.

He was married to Rose "Josephine" de Beauharnais and admittedly had a great deal of lust for her. He also had affairs with several of her maids in waiting and fathered an illegitimate child with one of her maids.

He also had a long affair with Marie Walewska of Poland and again fathered an illegitimate child.

He had a second wife, Marie-Louise of Austria with whom he had a legitimate son.

Later in Napoleon's life, when he was on St. Helena, he had an active sexual relationship with the Count de Montholon's wife.

So it would appear Napoleon was not gay at all.

Now to answer the exact question, can it be proven, well, obviously no.

It should be said that his sexual memoirs were not written by him and were a complete work of fiction (but Napoleon did find them quite amusing).

Napoleon Bonaparte Gay

Dearest, Napoleone Bonaparte has been dead for a couple of centuries. It will be rather difficult to prove that he *was* gay. At best settle for Bisexual, and call it good, considering he fathered a child on Marie-Louise Hapsburg.

To answer some of the other answers. Napolean was not an atheist. I have read volumes on Napoleon (by Jacob Abbott), and don't remember any of those quotes. But back to Napoleon, he believed in God and he was greatly impressed with Jesus. This he has said. He had absolutely no faith in the Catholic Church however, which is one reason he took the Pope prisoner. The Pope was actually taken prisoner twice (2 different ones). One during the revolution, attributed to Napoleon, though not directly done by him (this Pope died in captivity) and after he was Emperor, about the time he crowned himself. He had no faith in the Papacy because the Pope was a liar and a back stabber and would turn on him the minute his back was turned, even though he promised to mind his own business. Time after time this went on till Napoleon got sick of it.

Besides the child he fathered with Marie-Louise, he also fathered a child with a woman named Maria Walewska, who was of the petty nobility in Poland. The child, a son survived the Napoleonic period, if I remember anything at all, he joined the French Foreign Legion later in life. (not impossible since it was formed in the 1830's)

I don't believe for a minute he was gay.

Nobody can prove that he was gay, but the fact that he had a wife he was dedicated to seems to prove that he was straight.
