Any woman can check her cervix. In fact, lots of women who are trying to conceive do regular checks for fertility signs. To say that only an OB or doctor can check you is ridiculous!
So yes, it's very possible and can tell you a lot about what's going on with your body whether pregnant or not. I've done it every once in a while during my cycles to see if I'm ovulating.
Cervical checks are easy once you get the hang of it and it's simple to learn what to look for.
Here's a site that explains a check for dilation:

some human beings discover that squatting particularly than mendacity down is an outstanding thank you to do it. Others discover that putting a foot up on the lavatory or fringe of the tub and achieving down that way helps. I fairly have my husband do it, because of the fact he's greater powerful able to realize my cervix as I close to ovulation, whilst the cervix strikes up in the vagina.

It could be possible to check on your own if you knew how to measure it with your finger and know about the cm measurements compared to your finger. That would be the only way. You can definitely feel it opening up, but you have to know exactly how to check it.
That is a pretty neat site she gave you. It tells you what you need to know about how to measure it and what to look for.

After I had my baby I got the IUD. The doctor said that the instructions on the box say to check the strings, but that they were in my cervix so good luck. I asked my doctor if my husband could check for me, and he said that it wasn't really likely that he would be able to get in there far enough to be able to tell anything. Now, I can't speak for all people, but based on what my doctor told me, I am not thinking it's possible. If it were, the doctors wouldn't need that hideous speculum.

I was able to check mine when I was pregnant with my son. You have to understand what everything in your body is in order to know what you are feeling for. Assuming you have a good relationship with your doctor, ask him/her to tell you what to feel for. As long as you wash your hands, there is no danger to checking yourself. I'm almost 17 weeks, and at my last appointment, I asked my doctor to show my fiancee how to check me, and he was very accomodating (my fiancee was a little freaked out though).

It probably is possible, but why she would want to is questionable. Does she even understand what she is feeling and what it means. If not, then there is no point of doing it herself.

I am sure it could be possible if you knew what you were doing.... like if you were an OB/GYN. But I would NOT recommend doing it.

It might be possible, but you won't know what you're looking for. That comes with training.
