The days will begin to get longer - it is a winter solstice when Jupiter and Venus will rise with the sun and the new moon. These five events happening at the same time close the Mayan calendar cycle. If they hadn't been eliminated, they would have published a new calendar, no doubt. Think Y2k - you're reading this online, so all is well, and so with the Mayan calendar.
All calendars are based on astronomical events. The Mayans overlooked Mars - perhaps intentionally - but used Venus and Jupiter in addition to the sun and moon.

It's going to be the year before 2013. Some people think the world is going to end because the Mayan Calendar indicates the end of an era in Dec 2012. No one is sure what this means.

Nothing special will happen. It is just another false "end of the world" story based on someone's reading of an ancient Mayan calendar.

People think the world will end most years because of some religous belief but there is no evidence to ever back it up, and we're still here so I doubt theres any reason to worry.

The sun will rise, the sun will set and we'll go to sleep in spite of the calendar for the Mayan era running out. Don't sweat it they're all dead already.

I wish people would post these 2012 questions in the pseudo-science (excuse me. . . Alternative) category, instead of Astronomy.

Some say the world is going to end, but i say they are just full of it... No one knows when the world is gonna end, and we certainly should not look to extinct ancient civilizations for hints at when that date might be...
