My female red wag platy has been looking unusualy fat lately. My male has no similar symptoms and I'm wondering if she is getting ready to spawn. She has a round belly and seems to be quite healthy. How can i tell if she's pregnant and if she is how should i care for it?

If you have had a male and female platy together in your tank for more than a week, you can be pretty sure they have bred. No doubt she is pregnant and will deliver the babies before long. How long is impossible to say, could be any minute, it could be a few weeks yet.

If you really want to try to save the babies, you will need either another tank about 10 gallons or larger or a breeder net to hang in your tank.

Use that to keep your female way from other fish until she has the babies, then put her back witht he other fish and keep the babies away from the other fish. You can feed the babies crushed up flake or pellet food.

its possble...does her belly look dark around the end of her tail??? if yes then she is pregnant...petstores sell a birthing chamber for fish you put her in and when she has her babies they go to the bottom of the chamber where mom can't get to them then after she is done take mom out and keep the fry in the container until they are a little bigger...or you could put some fry friendly plants in the tank get some bushy plants that little fish could hide in and the other fish can't reach the bigger fish will eat some of the babies, but most should survive

Sorry in spite of the shown fact that it sounds love that's slowly dieing. attempt your water and do a water exchange if mandatory. attempt feeding organic meals like thawed frozen peas. because of the fact it additionally sounds like it may be swim bladder. Which maximum fish die from too. confirm you sparkling the tank with a siphon. wish its no longer too previous due. stable luck.
