I say ant because I know someone who said awnt and I could never stand that person. ;O)
plus that's just how I've always said it.
I think it is regional though.
oh, the person I know who says awnt is also from Virginia originally, and she's the only person around here that I've heard say it that way ....

because I see ants as things I squish, I always say Auntie, going back and forth between different pronunciations, probably because I move so much...
