If you are going to sell your own work in this way you cannot go wrong with drawings or paintings of local scenes if you're most likely market is a local one. Draw local churches, tourist attractions, buildings of importance and landscapes. Additionally, animals are often popular as are still life work. .

Finally, if there is a local artists group and they have a regular sale or there are galleries around check them out and look at the sort of work they show and if they sell card prints of the artist work. That will give you and idea of the competition and the niche you could fill in the market. If you want to make money as an artist then you have to supply what the market wants and not necessary what you would prefer to do.

If you've ever done any sort of printing this might be better for postcards because you could make more. Lino and collograph (not sure of the spelling - but it's the one where you stick bits on rather than cutting them out) are the main ones, but you can also get lovely repeat designs by making something simple like a potato cutout printing block. Or leaf prints. You could even maybe use bought rubber stamp designs if you added something extra like nice hand colouring.
Another option might be to get some stencils and practise painting them really well.
Good luck anyway.

sorry to sound rude, but if you havent got any creative ability to think, then I think you should re-think about this post card idea!
But draw ANYTHING! But it does depend on where you live, the surroundings, how many your planning to make,
say you live in an area where you have a famous landscape or mark, then draw that..you could draw it in a relly abstract kinda way to make it more interesing and original.!

if you are thinking of painting postcards as a commercial venture - think about the time it takes to make the cards and what people are prepared to pay for them - the usual downside to earning money as an artist. If you want subjects that sell - look around your local card shops - see what they are selling. You may be forced to paint what sells, rather than that which you want to paint....another downside to earning money as an artist.....
