Hi,

I met a problem when testing latency of a network. I can connect to Yahoo, but cannot ping through it. It always says "Request time out". This also happens when I try other sites I can connect to normally, even after I disabled firewall on my pc.

Has anybody met this problem? Any lead is sappreciated.

A "Ping" merely indicates a server is up, and responding to pings. A web server can easily operation without responding to Pings, as the relevant Daemon can be easily disabled. Many networks also disable Pings at the protocol layer as a security measure.

Many sites will disable ping response. However, you should receive a positive response with "ping yahoo.com". If you do not receive a positive response from this, you may have a DNS error in your pc (should be obtain dns automatically which means your router will provide it for you) or on your router (check this setting on the router vs. ISP recommendation).

Finally make sure all firewall ping response blocks are removed as there may be one somewhere along the line.

The websites are blocking ping requests. Because it's easy to make an iterating ping algorithm that would tie up their netwk/site with an infinite amount of ping requests. So most websites block ICMP traffic to prevent such attacks.

are you sure you disabled the firewall? do you have another firewall such as windows? Are you connecting through a company or internet provider? if its a company they may have a network firewall blocking ICMP traffic (pings) do a tracert to yahoo.com and see what the last hop is

Any network admin who is worth his money will turn ping response off on his routers and gateways.

There might be some things that you have to check:
Your firewall blocks ICMP messages.
Your router blocks ICMP messages.
Your ISP blocks ICMP messages.
Hope it helps
