about twenty minutes...............it's all computerized.............link from your car which is usually under the steering column to test equipment................test equipment is connected to Internet State web site that issues the number for the emission test.
If you pass all is good, if u failed 1 of the 5 tests then you'll have to have the repairs done............ sometimes it's just a simple tune up and EKG value or fuel need air/gas setting, or mixture.
Start early and do simply tune ups and regular oil changes, if any lights or on on your panel .................. that stays on .........these will need to be fixed ..................... Go ahead and have emmissions test done but be prepared to correct any problems.

A computer diagnostic takes about 15 minutes. Unfortunately a computer scanner can only give so much info (error codes). These can be very specific in some cases, but are often vague only giving a mechanic info on which of the cars systems is being effected. This will require more time to find the fault in the system. If it is an electrical problem it will require hand testing of wiring and sensors. This can take several hours to diagnose. At my shop we have answers for customers the same day in most cases.

Only a few minutes, the computer brings up a list of fault codes telling the technician what needs to be done. The time consuming bit is fixing whatever the problem is!
Lol, thank you for the thumbs down, but I do actually work at a garage!

1 hr to hook up the scanner and pull codes. after that time can only tell becuase it requires testing and depending on how many codes or what codes they are ( soft or hard codes ) it can take time. usually a good tech will reset the codes and retest trying to get the codes to come back up, reason being one code can effect the other, the reason I say 1 hour is because this is what a shop will normally charge

It depends on the capabilities of the mechanic performing the test.
