Highly likely that they have not met their due diligence requirement if they are only NOW contacting you. Deny you owe the debt IN WRITING as soon as possible, keeping a copy of the dispute for your records, and ask them to send you in writing what proof that they have.
Even if they send you something, continue to deny it because it is too long ago and they have not met their due diligence requirements to legally collect any debt as even the IRS only mandates that records need to be kept for 7 years...you could prove the matter was resolved it they had asked within a reasonable period of time...12 years ago is not a reasonable period of time.
Never, ever, admit that the debt might even possibly be a valid one as it can start the collection clock all over again in many states.

if they are at the point of bringing you into court to satisfy this debt, then you had best go. The courts have garnished my wages over an outstanding debt of 11 years. I would call the collection agency first thing and try and work something out before you have to go to court. Different name and length of time owed are two irrelevant things.

Pay the money! You owe the debt, it's time to pay up. If someone owed you money from 1995, you'd sure want your money, wouldn't you?

It's almost certainly too late for them to sue you for it. Check the statute of limitations in your state for breach of contract and get a lawyer.

Do you owe the money? Then pay it.
If not, show them where you did pay it.
