I think you are looking for 1981 when the Reds had the most wins. However, because of the strike, the season was divided into two halves. The Reds won neither half and didn't get a chance at the playoffs.

In 1994 there was no postseason play due to a players' walkout caused by difficult negotiations between the players' union and the owners. As long as postseason play occurs, however, the best 2 teams in each league are guaranteed the playoffs. The team with the most wins will win its division, and the 2nd most wins will take the wildcard spot even if it happens to be stuck in the same division with the team with the most wins (could happen with the Red Sox and Yankees this year... or any year, really - they just have so darn much money). If by some terrible luck the third best team is stuck in that division, too, they miss the playoffs. Sucks to be them.

1981 Cincinnati Reds. Best record in the NL but did not win either half of the split season, and had to stay home.

How is that possible? If you have the best record, you will be on the top of your division, which means that you have an automatic bid to the postseason???
