I think you're looking too hard. The symbol for ask is a question mark with two dots - suppose to look like a quizzical face. The discover symbol is an exclamation mark with two dots; this time it is to represent a face of one learning something new. The answer is to represent an individual sharing knowledge and insight making them happy - thus the smiling face. I am not an employee of yahoo! but I do not believe that were trying to embed phallic symbols on this page.
