Which type of bear should one run from and which should you play dead? How do I identify these bears?

I ask because I've heard some bears will not have any interest and you should make noise to scare them away or leave the area and they will not chase. While others, if will see you as prey and chase you.

Hey puredouchebag, nice mohawk. It's not 1982 anymore, you wannabe.

This depends on where you live but you should never run from a bear or from any predator as this will generally prompt their prey drive and cause them to give chase. There are no bears that, if given the choice, you should just lay down in front of. The main difference between black and brown bears are the size. Brown bears are significantly larger than the blacks and blacks come in three color phases so they may be black, brown or blond colored. If you're in bear country you should be proactive and wear a loud bell so the bears hear you coming. Generally they want to be left alone and most dangerous bear encounters happen because the people did not make noise and surprised the bear. Also, if you are in bear country you should be carrying bear spray or at the very least and air horn which will send the bear packing. Around bears you should always act calm, confident but not aggressive and back away slowly averting your eyes. If you are charged, curl into a ball (if you don't have any bear spray or air horn) and protect your vital organs and cover your head with your arms.
If you find yourself in a campsite and a bear comes in and you have no other protection, get two pots or pans and bang them together as the noise makes the bear very uneasy. However, the best defense is a good offense so be prepared, be proactive and you may never have to worry about an encounter.

Don't listen to that numb-nuts that says to run from all bears. You stand a 0% chance of outrunning any bear. If its a grizzly (big and brown) your best bet is to play dead (the bear will still maul you, it'll just lose interest quickly) or climb a tree. If it's a black bear, you could climb a tree, but they can climb too. You don't really need to worry about black bears, they're very shy creatures. Just make sure that you don't get between a mother and her cubs. The best thing to do is to talk loudly while you walk and make a lot of noise. If you do find yourself against an aggressive bear, try shouting and making yourself look as big as possible by spreading out your arms. If that doesn't work, try throwing stones or something at them, preferably the snout. I'm serious about you never outrunning a bear. A grizzly can run around 40 mph, and if you're a world class athlete, the best that you could hope for is about 25mph. You're best of letting them know you're there before they see you by making a lot of noise when walking.

Don't judge by color, black bears can sometimes be very light in color, similar to a grizzly.

Grizzlies are much bigger than blacks. Grizzlies are most recognizable by the hump on their shoulders and a narrower snout. They also have larger claws. Blacks are usually smaller with no hump and a shorter face. Blacks can also climb trees, while only young grizzlies can climb. No matter what the species, give them enough space. Supposed to stay 100 yards away.
