The Ads on the web page might not seem much, but Orkut (and all the other web pages like that) are paid a little bit for every single time a single user gets shown the Ad, and an extra fee if someone actually clicks on it. If you think of how many users log in to Orkut, and how many do it every single day. You can see a steady source of income.

Like all media (TV, radio, newspapers and magazines) even similar to billboards, the consumer pays something much more precious than his money: his attention, his mind.
And they feed it with lots of icons and images making him willing to pay his money.
