I don't know where you live but in the UK we are not prepared for adverse weather conditions. In Europe and I imagine the States and Canada the population are much more ready to cope. I would say that if loads of snow is forecast they would sleep at the depots ready to go out. Alternatively most of them can ski. When snow is very bad in France the volunteers come out as well with their tractors etc. fitted with snow ploughs. Hope this info has been useful!

They drive the snow plough to work, they usually arrange with a local school to park it.

they are called in early(before the snow piles up very much and the roads start to get slick) to fill the dump truck up with salt and check the scraper blade(some trucks have a blade on the back and some trucks have one on the front) get the truck fueled up then goes out on the road his boss will call him on a two way radio and tell him where to go and salt the road that motorist have reported slick. The driver will probably stay out all night to keep the roads clear for the next morning rush hour traffic. There are usually 1 truck for every 25 mile of road that has to be cleared.

Either he lives near enough to the depot to walk, or when snow is forecast, he parks the plough near his home the night before.
