The only kind should be given is constructive criticism. It should only be done in a humble and mild manner. The person receiving it should not feel inferior or if anything is their fault. They should not be blamed for anything. They should feel at ease and relaxed while it is given. If it is a child they should not feel put down or anything also. This could be the same as discipline for a child. No yelling should be involved. Have the right attitude and mind set while giving it. In my opinion all other kinds of criticism are bad.

Criticism is criticism, if it exceeds the solution.
Depends on the persons intension whether it is just criticism to degrade etc or constructive criticism that would benefit that person.
Like saying to a child you did that wrong (criticism) compared to
Good job next time try it this way (motivational)

Well, I think sometimes it is, but in this day and age it is a rare occurance. You raise a very good point.

I think people should try to give criticism in a way that is more constructive, rather than lace the criticism with insults or implications that the person is somehow inferior or stupid.

Sometimes people can be pretty stubborn, so I think that's not good. We should try to listen to those around us, and carefully decide about what they say. I think we should all also try to ask each other, "is what I'm doing OK?" or "do you have any advice for me?" Thanks for bringing this issue to light.

when it's just a bunch of insults. i mean criticism is supposed to be a professional opinion, stating the good parts and some parts where improvement is needed. when criticism turns rude or just into a bunch of insults stating how horrible or how wrong something is, it's no longer motivational, it's just an insult.

That Darren J is a smart guy. There's such a fine line between criticism and just being cruel. Criticism shouldn't be used as a negative reinforcement, but sadly, most people love to do just that. And it's much easier for them to bring you down to their level of unhappiness, and sometimes jealousy even by being overly critical.

Criticism is only motivational for anyone other than the person being criticized.

It makes them want to try harder in order to spare themselves the embarassment of being criticized.

Criticism is never motivational when it's used to hurt or tear someone down. We all need criticism occasionally...constructive criticism.

Criticism is motivational when given in the spirit of helping someone to achieve some goal they are about to,or apt to,give up on. History is full of people who received constructive criticism and went on to greater things.

I welcome it IF I know it is done in a loving spirit for the purpose of helping me and is not fake or hypocritically given. We need people who will tell us the truth, maybe set us on the right path, helping us to improve in mind, body and spirit. It can be a great thing if done in love, and the desire to be helpful in achieving our goals. That is a real friend!

I believe encouragement is better motivation than criticism.

Do you want people to succeed for the purpose of making you proud of them, not to succeed just in spite of you.

Use criticism sparingly.

When the person taking it is way too sensitive. Also when the person or people doing the criticism are also too insensitive about the language they use.
