The sweet gum trees seeds look very similar, but thats not it.

A green ash, maybe? I get spiky round ball things
(seeds) off that in the spring and summer. They are about 3/4" in diameter, brownish/reddish in color, wreak havock on the unsuspecting bare foot when they are dry and are a nasty mush when wet.
