For example, many players that have only had one at bat this season have averages of 1,000, but Alex Rodriguez's average is currently considered the highest. How many at bats (at bats per games played so far in the season) are needed to be in the running for offensive statistical categories?

A player needs to have 3.1 plate appearances for every game his team (not necessarily the player) has played to be eligible for the batting title, or for other offensive stats that are expressed as a percentage (slugging percentage, on base percentage, etc.)

In other statistical categories that are not expressed as a percentage, a minimum number of plate appearances is not required.

A "plate appearance" is slightly different than an at bat. Basically a plate appearance is any time you come to the plate in a game. However certain plate appearances are not counted as "at bats", such as times the batter walks, is hit by a pitch, hits a sacrifice, or is awarded first base due to interference or obstruction.

When determining a player's batting average, the number of hits he has are divided by his at bats. But to determine if he is eligible for a batting title, plate appearances is used.

Answering this question just gave me my 1000th point. Welcome to level 3!

The batting rate championships (AVG, SLG, OBP) require the player to accumulate a minimum of 3.1 plate appearances (NOT at-bats; they are not the same thing; AB are a subset of PA) per team's games played. Over a 162 game schedule, this requires 502 PA (there is an "add an o-fer" provision if someone falls short but would otherwise be among the qualifying leaders).

Over the course of the season, different, smaller amounts of qualifying PA are considered; how these are chosen I do not know, but it's probably something like (162 / 26) times the number of weeks into the season (the season lasts 26 weeks under normal circumstances), an approximate pro-rating of how much of the season has elapsed.

Pitchers qualify for the ERA title by accumulating one inning pitched for team's games played, which makes the math a bit easier.

In a nut shell- it's based on 3.1 plate appearances per game. For example last nights game being #105; 105 x 3.1= needs 325 appearances to qualify for the stats ranking. Season is 162 so a season qualifier would be at least 502 appearances. Most times the player will have more than 3 appearances per game so many players are eligible.

Those who answered 502 "at bats" are wrong. The other posters who answered 502 "plate appearances" are correct.
And here's a great example: A few years ago Willie McGee of the Cardinals (National League) was traded to Oakland (American League) in the month of August. He had accumulated enough plate appearances to win the National League Batting Title even though he was in the AL two months.
Another great trivia question.

A player needs 3.1 abats per team game. So if a team plays 162 games the batter must have 502.2 abats to be considered.

<> Just because something it legal doesn't mean it's right. <> There's a reason you can't spell 'assume' without '***'. People who assume too much end up making asses of themselves. < murder, how come?>> Doesn't make sense, does it - and yet, there you are advocating people merely ASSUME the government is right! <> WRONG! <> Ad hominem attacks hurt your credibility. Perhaps Marc, like me, doesn't see too much in the way of credibility when reading your question. < is NOT murder.>> The term "fetus" literally means "the young in the womb". The fetus IS a living human being. Life begins at conception, not birth nor some arbitrary point in between. Therefore, every abortion constitutes the murder of an unborn human being. <> But the fetus IS human. Therefore, abortion IS murder. < and stupid imagination.>> What's so narrow minded about acknowledging the unborn for the living human beings they are? Since you're unable to do that, wouldn't that suggest your mind is in fact more narrow than mine? < person NOT two.>> That just goes to show how schizophrenic human institutions can be - and you want to ASSUME such an institution (the government) is right.
