There are 3 key questions to answer:

1. Is it new? (check for products/patents)
2. Does it work? (build and test it)
3. Can you 'own' it (apply for a patent if appropriate)

No manufacturer or investor will take you seriously if you can't answer these with evidence.

Only 2% of granted patents are commercially successful in the Uk.

So you have to invest in it initially and prove its viable and secure the intellectual property rights (IPR) before you can do anything else. I would advise trying to market it as an accessory. If that works then you can also perhaps sell it to a car manufacturer later.

Do you know anyone who has business experience and can go 50/50 (or 51/49) with you in return for stomping up the cash?

The key question you need to answer is this: " Is my great idea commercially viable" Do you have the experience to answer that question yourself? I suspect not.

You will need the right expert to evaluate your idea in terms of the harsh world of business.

If you are in the UK one place you could find help is the government sponsored business link organisation. Just google " business link " and it will provide contact details for your locallity.

Explain you need an expert to evaluate your concept. Have an information pack handy that outlines your intentions without giving too much away. They will guide you through the procedure.

If outside UK try and find a University with a car research department as they have contacts with all the car companies.

Or contact the motoring organisations. They often have a technical section. I was involved with a fuel saving device and we had it tested at the AA laboratory in the UK. It did'nt work!

Or you could email me robwill700@yahoo.co.uk

Try putting a presentation pack together and mail it to all the key decision makers at car manufacturers. Only problem is that they may steal your idea so make sure you patent it if you can or put some legal text in the letter with it.

There are ways to present an idea to an auto executive while being covered by a non-disclosure/confidentiality agreement. Talk to a business attorney.

Once you contact them they can use your idea, slightly modified of course for nothing.

Either patent it first or set up and sell product (assuming it's a product) to the car manufacturers.

Good luck.
