One of the most prominent wasted effort , throughout life is the effort to postpone things. We are constantly faced with situations which demand some action for correction. But , invariably, we postpone action...push it aside and it is an effort. We treat everything like a New Year Resolution.
Another less prominent and misjudged is our requirement of money. We waste our efforts ( and at the cost of something better to do) to accumulate wealth in our prime days from 25 to 55 years. we hope that we are going to sit back and enjoy the fruits of our labour and wealth. But all of a sudden all our sins of bad livng catch up with us flooring us with Blood presure , diabetes, heart problem ... anything . We start living with a lot of restrictions.
The third most is the failure to understand our need when we age . we need company , love , children , grandchildren. But we shunned all of them when we were young and we want these badly. We feel we wasted out opportunities.

Your question really put me in a dilemma. Well, wasted effort for me is being born to this world as an empirical being. Well, we know for a fact that we'll all end up buried 6ft under, then all this toil, labor and struggle leads to nothing making existence pointless. With this point of view, there's no point sublimating your predicament and we are better of jumping of a building with this realization. But then all of this problems won't exist in the first place, if you and i didn't existed. So, i think wasted effort is allotting time for the realization that our existence is based not on superficial things nor pleasure but on pain and sufferings. That without suffering there is no realization of existence.

If you watched American Inventor (showing tonight), you would see how people (look at the long lines) wasted years and money developing products that were scorned by the judges. Many people received four no's. All that effort resulted in embarrasment on national TV.

National Socialism in the 30s and 40s in Germany. Communism throughout the world. The presidency of George W.Bush. The thought of democracy in any Muslim dominated country in the world. Apartheid in South Africa. Slavery in America and the West Indies. Life in Darfur. The life of Idi Amin. I could go on for ever, but, I think you get the point.

When you get past middle age and inevitable death is apparent you enter a period of crisis. Some resolve it knowing they led a good life and helped out the upcoming generation, those who fear death and wish they could do it over again could be said to have led a life full of "wasted effort"

Contrary to other answers here, I can tell you that fulfilling all your physical and emotional needs are not remotely wasted efforts - it's what you do after this has been done that is usually wasted. Get these met first, and then you can worry about what you're wasting.

My brother, has spent a fortune in medals, accommodations, ribbons, cheap swords, and military clothing just to tell people that he's a special operations officer for the U.S. Army. The sword he says was given to him by a prince in Saudi Arabia. He tells us that he flies to work in a helicopter. And he knows that we all know that he's been kicked out of the army on a hardship discharge. He has literally wasted money and time doing that to impress others.

I define "wasted efforts" as being anything detrimental, malevolent, or otherwise needlessly negative or adverse.
It would depress me to list actual examples, so I'll leave it at that.
