Most banks charge a fixed fee to process a wire transfer -- typically £25 ..

If you try to wire £50 then the cost will indeed be "50%" (or more, after taking intoaccount £/Euro conversion)

I am sure the bank would teal money in this way if they could. I have the impression since a couple of years that, if you put your money in the bank, they think it is almost theirs. First they kick out their staff by the thousands and now they thik they can pluck their clients.

57% is way too hight and I think it is not possible, unless we are talking about a small amount and they take a fixed commission.
Was this an national, intra-european or international payment? Did you use the IBAN code?
If you want, you can always try to file a complaint at the European Union.
I hope this was some help. Try to give more information.

Wow - that's ridiculous! Any chance of catching up with the individual that paid the cheque & reclaiming it from them?
