I was hoping someone could give me a good answer here... thank you for looking!

I have comcast internet with the McAfee antivirus (offered with the comcast service).

This morning when i got on my computer, the antivirus program wanted to do a "fix" so i went ahead and did that.. Then it needed to update it's virus definitions, so i went ahead with that.

Afterwards, program asked me to restart. I did.

I logged back into my account, and everything on my desktop is gone (except the wallpaper).

I logged into my guest account, and that works fine (all icons and wallpaper present.

Can someone give me a clue as to how to restore my desktop? Where'd it go?

try deleting the antivirus software, restart and see if ur icons are all gone or they are back. If they are back, might means ur antivirus is not suitable for your pc. If they are all gone, create another account for yourself. Macafee is not really user friendly, i would prefer Norton.

Did you create a restore point before you did this update? If so you can revert your pc back to it's previous state with it.

How to create a System Restore Point
Quit all running apps
Go to Start... All Programs... Accessories... System Tools... System Restore
At Welcome Screen, click CREATE A RESTORE POINT... click Next
Name the Restore Point.
Ex: Before I installed PageMaker
The date and time will automatically appear in the Restore Point so you don't have to include these in the name.
Click Create.
How to go back to a Restore Point:

NOTE: This will only restore system settings...not any lost data.
Quit all running apps
Start...All Programs... Accessories... System Tools...System Restore.
At select a Restore Point, choose APPROPRIATE Date... click Next
Confirm (make sure it's what you want)
Click Next
TIP: During the restoration, system restore shuts down Windows. After the restoration is complete, Windows restarts using the settings for the date and time listed above.

If the only thing missing are your short cuts you can re-create them. But if your programs are missing you need to do a restore with the instructions I just gave you.

Good Luck!

There is a little utility from SnapFiles called Icon Restore. You can download and install it and then follow the directions to restore your icons from My Computer. This does not need a system restore, which probably will restore your icons, but will also remove your antivirus update and everything connected with it.

Are the actual programs missing or is it just the desktop icons? If it is just the icons go to where they are saved and click create shortcut, and that should fix everything.

If the actual programs are gone, i sugest you contact customer support on the mcafee website.
