They look like big hooks that bolt to the side of the window frame and you use them to hold back the curtains. Some are quite ornate. Also expensive. Any ideas how to make my own that won't cost a lot but will look nice? I could sew them out of cloth, but I really want the other kind. Thanks for your help!

and impressive. it will be in a house I am selling. So it can't be too theme-specific. Just something most anyone would think looks great.

You can buy a metal bracket (or a piece of metal with holes) in DIY or hardware shop. If it is just a piece of metal - you can bend it to fit the shape you want, then screw on the top any metal or wooden ornament you have handy. Then screw to the wall. It should be fairly simple - this picture gives better example of the close-up http://store.rusticwildlifedecor.com/merchant2/graphics/00000001/swagholdersideviewm1.jpg
and this is how it will look with the curtains: http://store.rusticwildlifedecor.com/merchant2/graphics/00000001/5307m1.jpg
or you can screw a small hook into the wall and make a tie-backs. They look nice when made of the same material as the curtain. Here is an istruction and a picture: http://www.alternative-windows.com/tieback.htm

All valid suggestions so far. I'll assume that aesthetics are a major issue. The suggestions so far should "spark" you to research every possibility available,,, and perhaps coordinate with your thoughts/design notions/ other fixtures or furniture in the room/rooms. EVEN looking at THINGS not usually associated as a Drape tie back...IE: In a LOG cabin for instance HORSESHOES used as TIE BACKS might be very appropriate.
The process can be as simple as it can be primitive, or as ornate as your thoughts dictate. The exploration, in your notion, might be as much fun as applying the end result.
Obviously there are architectural pieces designed specific to what you need/want,,, or a simple bathroom towel ring, in Brass, might give you the same result? Certainly in some primitive,,,large cup hooks could perform the same eventual result.
Without knowing at all, how "formal" you want to go, certainly you can HIDE anything you install,,, unless your goal is for THAT TIE BACK to be the greater focus?
With no offense meant at all,,, a 10 Penny nail and a well tied knot, in a tie back, will not only hide the nail, but will actually TIE BACK the drape.

I made some for my bed room
I took a piece of 2 x2 and drilled a hole the same size as my metal rod which was a plant stake with an ornate end on it I got it for 2.00 at dollar general I attached the piece of wood to the wall with screws and painted it the same as the wall I cut the plant stake with bolt cutter to the right length bent it into a U shape and glued it into hole I drilled in the wood block already attached to the wall and then I could put my curtains in the hook, it cost me around 10.00 for all 4 hooks

I've "made" my own in the past. Go through your jewelry collection or scour the clearance bin at Claire's or Joann Fabrics for beaded necklaces. Those will work for securing the fabric and you'll have a personalized look for your window.
For securing to the wall you can use a couple of those 3M mountable hooks (they leave no damage to the wall when you remove them.) They now come in a stainless steel finish as well as white.

I use cup hooks screwed into the wall, you can get decorative ones or copper coloured ones, or silver ones. Make sure they point away from the curtain you are trying to pull back. If necessary, you can crimp them with pliers before you put them in the wall. Good luck.
