I dont know what the others have experienced but from my 60 times to Vegas, I have never once paid a dime for self parking and only a tip is required when valet parking and only on return. The exception would be if you have a specific request when arriving like you want them not to park it if you are only running inside for a minute then a tip upfront is appreciated.
Some places at busy times will restrict valet to only hotel guests but even then you can still self park for free and every major hotel in Vegas has a large parking garage except for Monte Carlo which was torn down to build City Center.

RE:
How much is car parking at the Venetian Hotel (or nearby) in Las Vegas?
Are these hotels generally valet parking or is the parking garage accessible to guests?
How does valet parking work, do you pay when you drop off your car, pick it up or both? What tip is the norm?

I agree with Rob L. I have been to every Casino on the strip and off the strip. I have NEVER paid for self parking or valet parking. Sometimes they may restrict valet to hotel guest and VIP card holders (Harrahs does this alot). Since parking is free, I usually tip $5.00 ($10.00 if I've won money). The slowest Valet Service was at Caesars. I waited for 45 minutes for my car.

You can leave your car at the car rental drop off pick up on Gillespie and Warm Springs. You can park for free. then just grab the shuttle bus to the airport. Lots of locals do that. The other poster mentioned cops or security tagging your car. On a 30 day trip, you may be subject to review. I would just call and get permission so you do not have an impound fee at the end of your trip

Valet parking at most of the strip hotels is free, and it IS free at the Venetian.
You typically tip the valet who brings your car to you when you pick it up. $1-2 is usually appropriate.

The last time I was there self-parking was free (just like at the other hotels).
If you are too lazy to self park then expect to pay the valet a few bucks coming and going. If you want your car treated particularly well (not parked near anything that could scratch or bump it) then go for at least 10 bucks when you drop it off.
