Early in the morning is the best time to water anything. Early morning watering not only allows the water to soak in, but it gives all the plants a chance to dry out when the sun comes up. Watering in the afternoon is a waste because of water evaporation and watering in the evening can lead to mold and mildew problems on plants and grass because moisture just sits on the foliage.

I learned this lesson the hard way. I was watering my vegetable garden in the evening. That water sits on the leaves during the cool nights and WILL develop mold. I'm fighting the mold now. Early morning is better because the sun dries up the leaves through the coarse of the day. It's not a good idea to water in during the heat of the day either because it's too hot and you can end up burning the plants. Take it from me . . . no evening watering . . . only morning.

If you can get up early enough to leave some time to water the garden, that is my favorite time to water. In the morning the sun isn't strong enough to evaporate the water so it soaks in. And since I always get water on the leaves, during the day the sun will evaporate that so we don't have so much mildew and rust. You'll find early morning is a great time to enjoy the garden and the other animals are also getting up and calling to each other.

The best time of day to water is early morning before the temperatures begin to rise. This gives the plants a good supply of water to face the heat of the day & is a time of reduced evaporation. If you can't water in the morning, it's important to water after the heat of the day & early enough so that the leaves have time to dry before nightfall to avoid development of fungal diseases. If watering methods don't wet the leaves (such as soaker hoses) you can water later in the day, but not too late because being left moist and cold at night can lead to rot and fungal infections of plant roots.

It's always best to water before or shortly after the sun comes up. By than the ground is cooler and you won't be giving your plants warm water. Warm earth is like a warm hose when water first goes through it. It's warm! By watering in the early morning the cool water will work itself down and help the plants while it's warmer.

When the sun is first coming up.
If you water in the dark, the garden could start growing mold.

early moring was always best when I lived in NJ and then if brutal heat, would do a quick watering at 4-5 p.m. but not saturation at night as it makes too much dampness and can hurt the flowers.

Early morning before the sun comes up that way it doesn't evaporate.
