Platoon or Saving Private Ryan if you want an actual war movie with lots of fighting and carnage.

If you are looking for something that is more about the personal side of war rather than just the fighting, check out Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. both are brilliant movies about the battle of Iwo Jima, but don't expect big bloody war movies like Platoon or Private Ryan.

A smaller movie that's worth checking out is Tigerland staring Colin Farrell. It was one of Farrell's first movies and probably one of his best. It's actually more about his training for Vietnam, but definitely worth checking out.

I have to agree with joby10095 above: Band of Brothers is a masterpiece that's worth checking out. Each of the 10 episodes is great on it's own, but as a series it's very powerful. And for what it's worth Band of Brothers is produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg who also produced Saving Private Ryan.

Sigh! Ok some of those movies were ok

BUT the Best War movie ever made. Has to be a south Korean movie name "Tae Guk Gi" The Brotherhood of War.

ITs without a doubt the best war movie ever. The special effects, the story line and the educational part. Delivers thoughout the whole movie.

Tough one this! I think the best war movie was "Guns of Navarone". Second best, "Dam Busters". Third best "The Battle of Britain" As for the worst war movies, any American war movie. All American films are supposed to be "Based on Fact" when the only fact was that an event occurred. Take Vietnam as an example. How many American films have been made that portray the Yanks as victors and heros, when in real fact, they were humiliated, butchered and cowards that killed thousands of women and children. In real life, the Yanks got their a**es kicked to hell and back. All them Nam films, all based on real events and not one film the same? The Yanks made a few WWII films as well. The films show them as heroic and victors, even during Pearl Harbour. In real life, the Yanks where being slaughtered and had to use H-Bombs out of sheer frustration of losing the war. They didn't beat Japan, they just murdered 10,000s of innocent Japanese women and children, in civilian cities. That is a war crime as under the rules of war, civilians can not be a legitimate target. Now for Somalia, "Black Hawk Down" does not portray the event truthfully. The truth is, the Yanks believed that Somalia was an easy picking. However, for many months, the Yanks got butchered by the Somalians and were forced to retreat. Poor little Somalia beat the Armed Forces of the mighty USA LOL However, last December Ethiopia walked into Somalia, which was much more dangrous than when the Yanks got butchered and they took control in only two weeks. Therefore, the films that are closest to reality have to the best. Fictional films (those that are American and supposed to be based on fact) do not come into my equation.

Hmm, I have to go with the classic Sands of Iwo Jima, but rounding out the top 5:

Siege of Firebase Gloria (Hard to find, but worth it)
The Dirty Dozen
We Were Soldiers
Band Of Brothers (I know its a mini-series, but it is great)

"The Big Red One" is a personal favorite of mine.

Or even "A Midnight Clear".

Sam Peckinpah's "Cross of Iron".

"We Were Soldiers" and "Saving Private Ryan" were certainly great.
