carry out the procedure? Is it the OB or will the family doctor or somebody else do it? Do they medicate the baby or apply some kind of topical pain meds? Is it hard to take care of afterwards? How long till it heals? Does it hurt him bad and bother him afterwards?

For everybody that keeps asking why- first of all we're catholic, and second of all I find foreskin gross as do many woman I talk to. Also lots of teenage and adult men are going and having it done which means they obviously arent happy with their parents decision. Either way -I wanted the info, not advice on what to do. thanks

Hey there! Well I used to work in the OB and they normally have a urologist do it. they do give the baby something to make it more comfortable. The most of the irritant for the child is that they strap the baby down to keep the legs and the arms out of the way, and the baby is so irritated about it since they like to be snuggled in a little ball. But, from what I have heard and seen the baby is basically over it when they wrap the baby up and give him back to ya. it takes a few weeks but really easy to take care of. go ahead and get some Vaseline and some 2x2 square gauze pads. you just keep it clean and change the vaso. and gauze every diaper change. It is pretty easy, but sounds like it would be so painful but really not that bad. The worse is when they have to keep him sprawled out to keep his arms and legs out of the way. It only takes a few minutes, I suggest but I am not sure that your spouse will want too, but i would suggest that he is with him. He does not have to watch but just be in the room. I did not let my baby go anywhere without one of us going with her. Pray about it, it will be over quickly and you will get him back right after it is done. Good luck.

My OB circumsized my son the day after he was born. Some will give infant tylenol and they use a topical anesthetic. They dip a binky in glucose water for them to suck on during the procedure. My son slept a lot for the next 2 days after the procedure. The after care is not hard. You apply a big goop of vasoline to some gaws, then after a couple of days, directly to the diaper until it heals. The nurse will show you how to do this. Don't be suprised if you see the skin growing back over. Your pediatrition will pull it back at his 1-2 month checkup. I was very freaked out while I I was still preggo b/c I've only dealt with girls before. Once I had him everything came very natural. Congrats and Good luck!!

HI Sarah. I am the proud mom of a 6 week old boy.We had him done at the age of 1 month. We where given a couple names of doctors who perform the procedure.Prior to procedure we gave are little boy some Tempra one hour before and we applied some topical cream a half hour before. The doctor then fr ooze the area before. It took about 5 days to heal, and from his behavior he showed no signs of pain or discomfort. As for care after wards just diaper change more often but we bathed and did everything else the same.Warning some doctors really don't agree with the procedure mine being one.

Well, congrats on the baby! I had my son circumcised and an OB from my doctors office did it. She came in the room and talked to me before so I knew everything that is going on. Each hospital is different but she explained to me that they were going to give my baby lidocain which is a local anesthesia. They also gave him tylenol about 1/2 hour before she did the procedure. When they came back with my baby, he was very sleepy and she said he didn't cry at all (Some doctors might lie but I trusted her). 1 hour after the procedure the RN came in and showed my boyfriend and me how to care for the area and I would say it healed in about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks.

Good Luck!!! and Congrats again!

I had two boys, and my OB offered to circumcise both while still in the hospital, but unfortunately, both were born with low platelets (I have ITP), so we had to wait. My oldest didn't get his platelets up until after he was 6 weeks old, so we ended up having to wait until he was a year old to see a urologist who did it in a hospital outpatient surgical ward. I do NOT recommend waiting until the child is older if you can help it. It took forever (a few weeks) to heal and they had to put him under full anesthesia for the procedure. It was bad because obviously he was old enough to know that something wasn't right and that he hurt... it was painful for the whole family to know how much pain he must have been in. By the way, I don't regret having it done at all, the urologist says that LOTS of older kids, teenagers and even grown men come in to his office to have the procedure done. I would think that would be much worse than having it done as a toddler.

For my second son, he also had to wait, but he was about 3 weeks old when he was ok'd to have the procedure done. It was done in the hospital's maternity ward by our regular family doctor and all they used was numbing meds (I had given him tylenol before we went). It was EASY to take care of and healed much more quickly than my oldest's. He cried a little bit the first day or so when he was wet, but within a few days, he was fine.

Anyways, good luck!

20,000 FINE TOUCH AND STRETCH nerve endings should be amputated from baby boys without asking the owner? You want to take their main pleasure zones and expose them to srtaph infection. This is such crap. There is a greater chance of the baby boy getting MRSA staph from this in a US hospital than the same kid getting HIV through his life. This is such a strange idea that one wonders why the US Meds have this obsession. We have higher HIV and very high Circ rate as compared to natural uncut EU and JP. Could it be cut male Drs and female MDs that are from cut tradition are trying to find a way to keep this barbaric practice going in the US? No other developed country is saying this! They think we are obsessed with choping off baby boy genitals. The alleged risk change (not seen in non african studies) is from 3.2% risk to about 1.78 % risk. Oh and BTW, circumcision raises (makes transmission more likely) the HIV for women. Look it up the same africa studies found cut transfered HIV at a much higher rate. The individual does not get much from this. One needs to avoid risk and use a condom. This is a fraud pushed by people that don't have it or don't know the main male pleasure zones are in the parts cut off by circumcision. One thing is certain, no person should have pleasure zones amputated without being asked. Stop doing this to babies. BTW, the stuff above about HPV being much lower with circumcision is WRONG. Look at the USA study that concluded the only factor that was related to HPV wass number of partners and that circumcision status did not affect HIV. One can see that there is something driving these studies -- the circumcision obsessed.

MY OB circumsized my son, not the pediatrician. It heals in about a week, we used neosporin on it to prevent infection. They use a topical pain medication to numb the area first. It seems painful for the first 48 hours though, my son screamed whenever he was wet at all, but it heals relatively quickly. It takes just like 15 mins total to numb then do the procedure. I have 3 older daughter so this was my first experience with it also. They did it in the hospital right before discharge. After the initial dressings we did not put any more on ever.

At the hospital in which I used to work, typically it was the OB who did. And their procedure was to use EMLA cream - a topical anesthetic. Unfortunately, as I wasn't involved in direct patient care, I don't know the rest of the procedure. I'm sure it hurts some, although the cream used is supposed to be really numbing so the pain should be minimal. And I do know that it was done shortly after birth - and the cream had to be applied about 30 minutes prior, and if the doctor wasn't able to get to the baby to do it in under and hour, they had to wait another 24 hours.

The local pediatrician came in to do my son's. He was 2 days old. I don't know about the pain med part, but he seemed fine with it. He wasn't fussy or anything. You just have to put lots of vaseline on it so that the urine doesn't burn. They have the vaseline in a squeeze tube, so you can just squeeze in on there and don't have to touch the area. It takes a couple of weeks to heal completely.

Added note: Some baby boys will have erections and some don't. If you have one that has usual erections, that will keep any extra foreskin from sticking back. If your son, doesn't really have one, then you will have to make sure to pull it back at least once a day after it is healed to keep it from sticking and to make sure that it does heal completely.

I only know this because I went through it. Apparently it is quite common for it to reattach a little. The pediatrician will look at this, when he goes for his well baby check ups.

Good luck and Congratulations

My experience (in March) was that the OB performed the circumcision the day after he was born. They apply a topical pain reliever. They say that it doesn't hurt them. But with your first baby of course you can only imagine... (We were concerned about that too.) It's easy to care for afterwards just get some petroleum jelly in a tube and squeeze it on really thick on the area. Watch the nurse do it in the hospital - that's what I did (they really glob it on thick!)... It doesn't seem to bother him afterwards either and it doesn't take long for it to heal - I can't remember an exact time frame - sorry.
