I met a down and out who was begging for money i stopped to give him some money, and was told by a friend that i shouldn't give him any money, but does it really matter, are we not all human beings at the end of the day regardless of which walk of life your from?

It doesnt matter that you can spare some change for the needy. However, apart from the frauds which do happen, it does matter that they would rather beg than look for a job.

Im sure you've heard of the saying "give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day, teach him to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime".

While you're not expected to actually teach them how to get a job, giving them money which they dont have to work for does make things all too easy for them to continue living in squalor. I bet he gets yelled "get a job, you bum" like a dozen times a day, but its no better to feed him say, a pack of smokes, or a bottle or six, he buys at the end of the day with the money you give him.

True that not everyone is born with a silver spoon in their mouth or even a roof over their heads, but its all the more reason to work harder. If there are enough jobs to need outsourcing, there are enough jobs for him too.

Actually, I do agree with what you just said. Regardless of any circumstances, we are all the same, human and all. Usually, I do give money to those begging, but that only applies to when I'm in Singapore, because it's safer. If I go to some other country, it might not be as safe. I've heard of stories where if you give one begger a small donation, the other beggers that are hiding would run out to the open and blatantly rob you, or something like that. It's a contemplation issue. Conscience vs, i don't know, your money and your well-being?

Yeah, that was pretty cool of you to give him money, but you have to consider why he's homeless in the first place or why he isn't at a homeless shelter where he'd be provided with all dier needs. It might be that he's a cocaine addict or an alcoholic, and you just aided him in ensuing his addiction. Whatever the situation, it was definitley kind of you to stop and help him. You're right-- We're all human and all equals in this world.

I agree with you, we are all human at the end of the day. However what good will your money do him, he will probably only use it for booze or drugs and get himself more addictive, next time how about giving your money to Shelter or other homeless charities they will be able to help way more homeless with that money.

You did a good deed why not give him a few bucks to help him...especially if you have it to spare...besides we all need help sometime and we really don't know when we'll need it so yea at the end of the day we are all humans no matter what

I watched a documentary about homeless fraud.

There was a guy who spent the whole day begging for money and then drove home in a BMW

Agreed, however, a beggar will ask and a true need will be seen far before the request. I have given cash to the down and out but never when asked, I choose just who speaks to my heart w/o a word spoken.

I agree with you hun, yeah ok so he might be saving it all up to go and buy drugs, but unless he was born a drug addict, which i very much doubt, I always think how the hell did a person end up in that state, you just don't know, I feel sorry for them really. Good on you :-)

It was very nice of you to do so ....but i think what your friend is trying to say is if he/she always relies on begging they will never get themselves out of the rut there in...

They can get help if they choose to take it...

I'm not being mean and it is hard seeing people suffering but sometimes the only person that can save them are themselves...

Regards

You have to answer to your own heart. Do what you feel is right and don't worry about others opinions. But don't be surprised if the good deed goes awry - they often do. Sometimes you just have to keep trying and hope for the best.
