the best:
baggio, rossi, maldini, tardelli, cabrini, altobelli, antognoni,
costacurta, mazzola, riva, del piero, pippo, andrea pirlo. the list is endless.
but the best ever is a pick between maldini, baggio, rossi, tardelli, riva, antognoni and andreal pirlo.

Well, if you want the best Italian CITIZEN, it would be Kaka since he just earned his citizenship this summer!
If you are looking at best Italian born player, there are a few that come to mind.
For current players, I would have to say Gigi Buffon, being that he is the best GK in the world.
For field players, I think that Cannavaro is a great defender, along with Nesta.
For grit, definitely Gattuso. He is just an animal and inspires his teammates.
For skill, it would be Totti, even though he is injured too often.
If I were to start a team right now, I would pick the players in this order:
Buffon
Gattuso
Cannavaro
Pirlo
Nesta
Totti
This is due to importance of position in comparison to skill

It's a toss-up between Gattuso and Cannavaro. That's right, I'm not including any attackers here.
It's true that the Tottis and Tonis put spectators in the stands, but it's the workhorses like the Gattusos and Cannavaros who do the dirty work and win championships the way they did last year in Germany.

well this is a really profound question which i shall care to answer as i am in real need of those points dude.....
so moving ahead u asked wo was the greatest ever italian footballer...well it is a really hard question if u ask me ...italy is known to produce some the worlds greatest players zola, totti, toni, cannavaro, del piero, etc ............ut my favourite shall always be andrea pirlo.....he is one man whom i shall alwys admire a goodsportsman, and never gets into trouble of the pitch, and also because its like he controls the ball with a remote control or something.... the moment he hits it it flies in the air meeting the reciever with deadly accuracy and his free kicks are a delight to watch ......if only i could employ him as my private hitman or something he would be brilliant with the gun........
