That is a two side sword question!! Here is how I feel about it and maybe some hardcore animal lovers out there may not agree, but everything has reasoning to it. If my dogs or cats got sick, it would all depend on the vet, one knowing what was wrong with the animal and if is curable or even operational, and if so and the vet was sure about this then my next question would be would the animal return to health or would it suffer for the rest of it life. I think this is more of a personal question of what your moral and love for that animal is. If the vet was certain that its health would be restore then yes without a heartbeat I would do it either by putting the bill on a credit card or making payment plans or borrowing it from family or friends and paying them back if i didn't have that much in the bank, but also animal insurance is a great thing to have and takes the burden off and it is not that expensive, your local vet would have great contacts for that information but also there is alot on the Internet. hope this helps Kelly

Of course I would, one of my pups, Jack was very sick when we got home one night. Grey gums, bloody diarrhoea, drooling, all symptoms of rat poison. We rushed him to the 24 hour vet where he was put on a heat pad and wrapped in bubble wrap to get his temperature up, put on oxygen, placed on a drip and later plasma. He was listed as critical, and if he made it through the 8 hour mark he would probably survive. Each hour increased his chances, each hour he improved. We went to the vet the next day and hand fed him as he wouldn't eat anything else, he would only eat from me and no-one else!! During that period he had at least 20 blood tests and in the end the vets decided that it was inconclusive, what caused it I mean. It could either have been an extreme allergic reaction on some one fed him rat bait, but my other pup Tasha is the pig, so how the "someone" fed him rat bait but didn't get Tasha who is the pig, I do not know. The other mystery is, when they are outside most of the time they are supervised. It came to about $1000, but I am glad that we got back a healthy and happy puppy.

It would all depend. A little over a year ago we spent around $1500 just keeping our dog alive while we were returning home from vacation. We could have spent thousands more for tests that the vet did not feel would result in any good information, so we made the decision to release him from his suffering. However, if the vet had said she thougth she knew what the problem was and that it could be cured with surgery or what ever, yes I would spend the money.

If you can't afford the possibility, then get pet insurance. I had it for my cat, and they paid out when he got cancer and needed frequent treatment. I have it now for my middle-aged dog and pay less £10 (US$20) every month, safe in the knowledge that if anything happens, we can do whatever is best for him.
The less sure you are that you could cover an expensive bill, the more you ought to have insurance!
Hope that helps.

I don't have thousands in the bank so I couldn't pay for the procedure even though I'd want to. If I could get on a long term payment plan I would.

i love all my animals i hav a dog a cat and a rabbit and when it comes down to it i would have to do it and just pay little by little. im olny 17 right now and i pay for all my animals food, toys, vet bills, bedding, litter, bath stuff etc. my mother and step dad are so pround that i pay for every thing on my own they think it teaches me resposabilty. but the reson i do it is becuz i love my pets and if i dont take care of them who would. when my puppy need to get fixed it was going to be$80 and i have a great job but between all my gas money, car insuranse, and pet stuff. i really didnt have that much to get him fixed but he really needed it (somethings not right with his stuff) so i called the humain socity and they said the would pay hafe for me! so now his going to get fixed and be healthy! so there are ways to get a thousand dollars if yo need it you just need to know who to call when it comes down to it and i know my 80 wasnt that much but at the time it is more then i got. there are programes out there that will give you grants for haveing to take your pet to the ER like they have for people whne they have to go to the ER and cant pay it. you just got to know the right places and people to call! so to answer you question yes i would do it cuz i love my pets so much but i would get some help from some other organstions!

I'd have to consider all of the factors.
If the pet was already infirm, then no.
If the pet was really new to the family, probably not.
If the pet was in fine health otherwise, and we loved it, then probably yes. I've known some fine 3-legged cats.

If it was my rabbits No! they are not worht thousands of dollars and when it comes to breeding.....they are easily replaced..........lol if you can't already tell I'm a rabbit breeder, but if i had a dog i would also not do the surgery, since it is not guarnteed to make the dog live longer anyway.

I would definately do it. Luckily my dog is insured.
Unless, it would make her quality of life worse than it is now she is healthy, or if it wouldnt make a lot of difference to her condition.
