PATA (parrallel) ATA drives as well as SATA (serial) ATA drives can be used in RAID configurations. Raid requires more than ONE drive at minumum you will need two drives and a RAID controller.

RAID is Short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employe two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. RAID disk drives are used frequently on servers but aren't generally necessary for personal computers. You can if needed run raid for higher throughput and higher fault tollerance which can improver your performance but you will need more than one drive and generally you set this up prior to installation of the OS.

You can use software raid systems but those are much less effective than hardware based systems.

I suggest you do a search for RAID and see if it is something you think you need.

Simply put, a RAID setup is where you hook 2 or more hard drives together. Fort example, you can hook them up to mirror data (RAID 1), so if one crashes, the other one will still have your data. So, you'll need at least 2 drives to have RAID. :)
