Puerto Ricans have repeatedly rejected independence from the United States, and neither does it seem like PR will be admitted into statehood any time soon.

Can the US unilaterally decide that it is severing its ties to Puerto Rico and making it an independent state?

Good question! I never thought about it, but sure we could. We took it from the Spanish and declared it a Commonwealth. They have refused statehood and independence and have a huge tax advantage as a commonwealth (exempt from most of our taxes). We could cut them loose.

because of the fact PR needs neither statehood nor independence. a great sort of citizens choose one or the different, yet there is not any large consensus. "On April 29, 2010, the U.S. living house of U.S. Congress voted 223–169 to approve a Puerto Rico Democracy Act of 2010 invoice for a federal sanctioned technique for Puerto Rico's self decision allowing Puerto Rico to set a clean referendum that it would pave the way for the 1st congressionally mandated votes on status in the island, and (probably) statehood by using 2011."

The US can do what ever it wants with it's territory. We give them the ability to choose. We should get rid of that tax money leach.
