You need to work with your OB. With a cardiomyopathy, and the stress labor and deliver CAN put on your heart, your OB may very well recommend a C section.

There are relaxation techniques that can be used during labor, but with a medical condition like yours (your cardiomyopathy), I do not know how that works.

When you go in for your initial visit (probably in the next couple of weeks??), you will have to let your OB know about your cardiomyopathy, any allergies to medications, and you will be able to discuss with him/her options that are best for you with your cardiomyopathy.

Many OBs do not go with a C section in most cases just on request...there has to be a medical condition that will make it dangerous for the mommy or the baby to go through labor because of the additional risks of a C section.

Your doctor will tell you what they think is best, but I've know two ladies with heart problems, and they've both delivered naturally. You'll probably be just fine! You'll be closely monitored during labour, and if anything goes wrong, they can whip the baby out in no time at all. Though you might not think so whilst in labour, a vaginal birth is better than having a caesarian. The healing up time afterwards is much, much, much shorter.

You need to find a good doctor and discuss this with him. I am sure that the risk for your heart is minimal, they know what they are doing. You could have an epidural, it will make you more relaxed, but i don't know how it affects the heart. You can also choose a c-section, but it will cost and it will be more uncomfortable afterwards. Discuss all the options and your concerns with your doctor. You have 8 months to be perfectly prepared. Congartulations!

They have medications that can take care of the heart thing.. And it all depends on the doc your using.. you need to talk with them and asses the risks to you are your baby... a C-section is not to be taken lightly.. I know I have had to and every 4 years or so I have to go back in and have the scar tissue removed...

You can request it, and depending on the doctor, you might be able to convince them to do that for you. Just realize that elective c-sections come with their own set of problems, which the doctors will tell you about. I'm sure if you tell the doctors about your heart problem they will be able to create the proper environment for childbirth for you, or they'll direct you to someone who has that experience.
Good luck!

I know you can't request a c-section just because you want one However if you have a heart condition, they have to give you one because of that and not let you go through labor, in NY it is the law.

If they don't think there is any reason for a c-section then you may have to go private and pay for it, otherwise your OB/Gyn will advise you what the best decision is.
