Sometimes my laptop reads DVD movies, sometimes it doesn't. Same DVDs work, for example my Flame of Recca series DVD works while my Rome series DVD doesn't work

Chances are is that your DVD has gotten scratched up as to not play and may need to be taken to your local video store where some now have a machine that repairs and recoats the surface for a nominal fee. Also if you take your DVD and hold it up to the sun or a light source and look at the surface to see if any of the data material sheet on the top of the DVD is torn or speckled and you can see light shining through it. You will have lost that section of the information and when the Player hits that spot it will freeze to a stop if large enough. Same effect when you see the brief pixle squares of distortion when playing sometimes. And just to be on the safe side, you may want to open up your DVD drawer and safely clean the lense with a nonabrasive cloth-thoroughly..and dont worry about using a rubbing alcohol and a QTip goodluck

Check your disc for scratches. If there are no scratches, your drive could be going out, as they act intermittent sometimes.
It could also be the player you are trying to use, or some other kind of software factor.

Try VLC, and if you are getting the same results, it is most likely your drive not liking the disc, or something else is going on with the drive. Also try playing the same discs you are having problems with on some other drive.

VLC can be downloaded at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Best of luck.

Could be a DRM issue (Digital Rights Management). If you are using DVD software that has DRM coding and/or the episodes you have were gotten illegally, it may not play.

Windows Media Player 11 is one such product that confirms DRM before it allows playing or copying.
