Discharge is a normal part of the menstrual cycle, you should get clear, and whitish discharge right upintil you are an old woman. I know I was never told this in school (I;m 16 & started my periods when I was 12).

Your vagina is naturally lined with fluid & mucus in the same way your ears have wax & your nose has snot. It has several functions; it clears away bacteria to protect you from all kinds of diseases & infections. (Like in your ears, nose etc your vagina also had cillia- little hairs that act like a conveyor belt removing trapped dust etc.) It also acts as a lubricant during coitus (sexual intercourse).

Before contraception, and some religions still use calender method... Throughout each month in between your periods, the discharge (it is mucus!) will change colour & viscosity (how sticky/runny it is). Women use to use this to find when they were most fertile, and avoid having sex then.

Breifly what happens each menstrual cycle is, you have a period- you bleed out old womb lining and egg, then over the month your womb produces a new lining, an egg is released, it replants, then if you don't get pregnant you have another period & the cycle starts again. You are most fertile at Day 13 -16 roughly, (when an egg is released) This is when the mucus is probibly whiter.

In a short answer for you- you will always have some mild discharge around the area or in your knickers, it is perfectly normal, it usual increases at certain points in the menstrual cycle or if a woman is sexually excited. But really nothing to worry about, you'll soon stop noticing it when you realise that every woman has it.

if in doubt talk to a scholl nurse/trusted teacher/ or your GP doctor, or a parent if you can. Please don't listen to your freinds at this stage, it is likely they willgive you a strange untrue answer. Hope this helps!!

Discharge between your periods is normal to have. It's part of what helps keep the vagina moist on the inside and it starts from when a girl starts developing right at about the age you are and continues for many, many more years in to her life.

When she doesn't have enough of this discharge in later years it can cause the area to be very dry inside and when this happens it can be quite painful.

I would recommend talking to your mom about this as well and also your doctor when you have your next check up.
