Madam or ma'am is the title given to a woman. It is derived from the french word "madame". The french word in turn is derived from latin "mea domina" means honoured mistress of the home.

you feel 'madam' originated from 'mad'. put another way why not say 'mad' originated from 'madam'. when Julius Cesar was frustrated by the antiques of Cleopatra he turned to Anthony and declared that i have been calling her madam for years but she does not deserve the exalted title i have given her. henceforth i will shorten the title and call her plain MAD, which will be a true reflection of her state of mind. sounds convincing does it not. PS:- NO OFFENSE OR DISRESPECT MEANT OR IMPLIED TO THE FAIRER SEX.

Really? I think its a rumour tht totally sux. Cuz it jus can't b so. Sounds so ridiculous. Madam, I guess, originates frm the French word Mademoiselle which means something like young lady.

And some say the word Mister originated from Master, which itself evolved from Mastubation.
Got it Mister? Or want more opinions on your "smart" query.

No, but it depends to which person you want to use or apply the word "madam". For women, it is not from mad but for "mad people", it depends on you.
