Either Alfonso Cuarón or Mike Newell. Alfonso did a great job with prisoner of azakaban i reckon. it's the scariest of the first 3 books and i think he did a good job. mike newell (who is english) did a fairly good job with goblet of fire but i think the last scene with voldemort and the death eaters at the graveyard was done pretty good.
what made me disappointed about the order of the phoenix is that the whole battle in the ministry of magic was neither scary nor exciting. it's a shame coz that scene is so crucial in the story, with the prophet and also the death of siruis black. it could have been done a lot better.
half-blood prince and deathly hallows are dark. i think the director needs to be someone who can bring this mood into the movie as well. that's why i'll go for alfonso or mike newell.

J.K. should take a stab at it!
If not, I like Yates then Columbus.
Seeing that 'The Frighteners' was the only movie that Peter Jackson directed that could even closely resemble a good movie, I would have to say no to him.
He is HIGHLY overrated.

David Yates cuz i think the 5th movie is the best yet and he directed it very well! 2nd Chris Columbus, 3rd Alfonso Cuaron, and 4th Mike Newell.
J.K. Rowling should try as well since she is the author!!
