If your question concerns hypothesis testing of variances, then the null hypothesis, Ho, is always one of equality (σ²1 = σ²2). The alternate hypothesis, (Ha) is always one of unequality (not = , >, or < ).
If you want to test for equality of variances, you would form a ratio of the variances (σ²1/σ²2) and do an F-test.
BTW, The answer by "One Who..." is not necessarily true.

I am not sure what course you are taking but from the question and a preliminary analysis of the data, if you find that the distribution is symmetrical, the variance will be equal on either side of the average. If the distribution is asymmetrical, you have unequal variance.

Can you post one of the typical questions so that I can test whether the above is right? I am writing the above from memory and may be wrong.

Rahul Dravid is a cricketer with a wealth of experience, he is said to be a wonderful individual who gets along with everyone and is respected by everyone who has something to do with cricket, be it the fans, current players from all over the world and officials at all levels of the cricketing world. He got this respect from his contributions not only to the Indian cricket team but to the game as a whole all over the world. You could walk the streets here in the Caribbean Islands and everyone knows who he is 'The Wall', Rahul Dravid. Now having these traits or characteristics and a love for the game of cricket and an attitude that made him so successful is the explanation to me why Rahul Dravid made a weaker looking outfit when compared to other teams in Rajasthan Royals (No doubt the likes of Brad Hodge and Shane Watson helped) the success they was in this edition of the IPL. Simply he is a very good captain. Rohit Sharma, commentators keep praising his talent, to be honest when I see some of the shots he have played he is very talented. He is also a very good fielder and the way he carries himself he definitely has a good head on his shoulder about the game of cricket. Rohit's team is packed with stars who have experience that no other team (maybe only Chennai) can match. So when compared to Dravid his work may be easier as the leader, but you still have to execute. The thing is with Rohit though you see he is taking more responsibility to get runs how he is the captain, which is a good thing. They are both talented, Dravid made his name already though.
