I should think much of it comes down to luck. Being a sailor has always been a very dangerous job, and sailors are often very superstitious and fond of their good look charms. So they would dedicate their boats to their patron god or local spirits. Those gods associated with looking after people tend to be female. Certainly, the figurehead on old ships tend to be women. Women onboard ship were unlucky, but women in general were lucky (lady luck), and of course, it was the women back on shore that would be praying for their safe return.
I am pretty sure this is a western cultural thing and seem to remember that some cultures in the east tend to refer to machinery as male.
It would be interesting to know if Western vessals named after men are refered to as male of female, e.g. H.M.S. Rodney, or The USS Benjamin Franklin?

because boats/ships always get tied to bouys and when they come into port they hide their bottoms. plus they cost a fortune and are a pain in the ****

They cost a lot to maintain,they seem to have a mind of there own.If you don't keep a eye on them they will leave without you.They have a cockpit,If you don't buy them nice thing they will look bad.Something always broken,or need repair.Guys don't like to blame guys when something goes wrong.The list is long???

So if he called it a 'him', the crew would think he's gay; and that wasn't always so easily accepted in polite society as it is now.

this simply reason behind this may be because that only men worked on these ships/boats pending how far you go back in history,
this may be one of meny reasons why people say she came in or away she goes
