Well, being a cop means you get to be the "Good Guy", the hero, the catcher of bad people who might hurt your family or other innocents. You make the place a safer place to live, and work, and play for us all. You can be proud that you are doing something "real" to make the world a better place (compared to just, say, knitting doilies for a living).
I like to think of it as putting money in the bank: Every time you catch a Bad Guy, you get a point. It's nice to have a lot of points!
You end up with lots of interesting and funny stories to tell at family gatherings.
Being a cop is probably less dangerous than someone who works as a sky-scraper builder. You may never have to even pull your gun, much less shoot someone, in your entire career.
There is a higher chance of divorce and alcoholism among officers, however. But I believe this might be because their spouses don't want to hear how the officer's day went, so the officer has to find someone (or something) to talk to - just like everyone else does. Sometimes it helps the spouse to go on "ride-alongs" or even work as a civilian in the police department so they can see how routine everything really is.

No, but they are just saying this because they are afraid of losing you. If your g/f really loves you, it shouldn't matter what profession you do, being with someone you truly love if even for a few days, is better than settling for someone who wants to run your life, and as for your family members, it's none of their business, it's your life, and it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.
? why didn't they say anything b4 when you went thru all that training?
