I am told that we are souls, an integral part of, but separated from, the Supreme Soul for the time being, in order to acquire experience through a physical existence to enrich ourselves and pave the way for the final reunification with the Supreme Soul.
This theory does look logical to me in the sense that it indicates a constancy despite continuous change, which seems to truly justify this whole universe.... everything changes form but nothing seems to get destroyed to zero. More importantly, this theory is more appealing than considering ourselves as a special combination of matter and energy that has acquired life for the time being due to various favorable physical conditions on earth. Yet, the key aspect in both is the relative insignificance and impermanence of our individual being, which is a stark reminder of how small and minuscule each of us in reality is.

If you want to become whole,
first let yourself become broken.
If you want to become straight,
first let yourself become twisted.
If you want to become full,
first let yourself become empty.
If you want to become new,
first let yourself become old.
Those whose desires are few gets them,
those whose desires are great go astray.
For this reason the Master embraces the Tao,
as an example for the world to follow.
Because she isn't self centered,
people can see the light in her.
Because she does not boast of herself,
she becomes a shining example.
Because she does not glorify herself,
she becomes a person of merit.
Because she wants nothing from the world,
the world can not overcome her.
When the ancient Masters said,
"If you want to become whole,
then first let yourself be broken,"
they weren't using empty words.
All who do this will be made complete.

HI,
Your question though brief provokes many isssues. I believe that fundamentally what defines us is that we are mortal, we are limited, we are perishable, and we are definite, but unlike animals who similarly posess these attributes, we are capable of attaining enlightenment, by acquiring accurate knowledge through self descipline. Thus, we are travellers, seeking for enlightenment. Few will attain it in this life. Many will waste their life away.

We are actors on stage. We are part impressions of what others make of our intentions, action, appearances...never to be quite fully 'known' or understood, yet still understood enough to get by.
