All depends how it cools and what the composition of the melt is as well as if its magma or lava. Typically, minerals will begin to form by the way of Bowens Reaction Series as the melt cools. If it is lava, it typicall cools very fast into a basalt if the lava is mafic (ferromagnesium) and sometimes into obsidian if it is felsic (High silica content).

It becomes rigid and like glass, as in obsidian, or it cools fast and makes the common red lava rock we see around in gardens. with the gasses and air pockets in the rock, it is paticularly light in wieght. Pumice is large ash particulates mixed with water and pressure, over time it forms floating rock.
