Books record the thoughts of society of a given time- things that change subtly over the years. In Jane Austin's books, she shows a world where words can mean two or three different things at once, where the goal for a woman of society was to get married and and have a family. A little different from now. There are many such differences. Any old literature classic will give that to you.
Books also provide a realm where today's problems do not touch you. When you have just had a huge fight with your boyfriend and you want to give him a chance to cool down, you can read. Then your time is spent empathizing with the characters, rather than worrying if your bf is coming back at all.
And books transfer knowledge from one person to another, while giving the context for the knowledge. It is so much easier to understand what happened during a certain era,for example, if you read a novelization, fiction or nonfiction. Although, the fiction should bereasearched just as wel as nonfiction.
And, reading increases your intelligence, vocabulary, spelling, and communication abilities. Adult intelligence is mainly measured by vocabulary. I took a psych class on it.

No Greater Sacrifice "This book has it all : adventure, romance, archaeology, history, puzzles to be solved, some mysticism, lightening-speed travel jaunts across Europe, faith lost and found, good versus evil--it is a fun, mostly light read that was exciting and absorbing. I got a little lost in all the symbolism, and how the pieces of the puzzle all fit together, but I see this as my own short-coming, not that of the book. Renee D'Arcadia is a great heroine, honest, direct, super strong both physically and emotionally. It is great to see a male author create such a wonderful female character. Her hero, and ours, David Arturo, is strong, gentle, an almost ideal man--(with a few of the flaws most men seem to struggle with). The other characters contribute just the right tension and fullness to the story. This is a great accomplishment for a debut novel."

Props (any old play)
Writing Pads

Are you studying library science by any chance and the five laws of library science?
* Books are for use
* Every reader his/her book
* Every book, its reader
* Save the time of the reader
* A library is a growing organism
Books can serve as records, they can have artefactual value (such as the Popol Vuh at the Newberry Library in Chicago), they are time capsules where thoughts and words lie dormant until readers pick them up and breath life back into them. They can tell stories, convey feelings, store and provide information and answers. They are a persons thoughts and/or work, etched into something tangible and it will remain indefinitely accessible.

Books provide an escape - not simply from everyday life but from a fixed perspective: the reader's own.
Non-fiction provides information.
Novels, poetry, short stories, epics - can challenge the reader, or deliver a perception they would otherwise be ignorant of.
Books can instruct or they can construct a philosophy, a dream, an idea.
They are excellent prompts for expansion of the mind.

Well books are the one format that has stood the test of time! If you were to save a book to your computer now, would you be able to open it in say 20 years time?
Theres already computer files from older programs that the national archives are unable to open.
Books are portable too, you can take them anywhere you want and read them. Much more comfortable in bed!
